Law Firm Haiku

Sitting in my office one day, I had the idea of doing my arguments and memos in haiku from that moment forward. This summed up my latest memo:

Breach of warranty
Claim is not pre-empted by
Indemnity clause.

That was all I needed to say, really. I was at a meeting with opposing counsel that morning on a preliminary matter in another case. I should have said:

Let us settle this.
Waive my client’s costs and fees,
Get to the merits.

That would have saved us nearly an hour. I liked this game, but it would have wrecked my billing structure if I could take care of everything quite so quickly.

Billable hours
Vanish like a spring snowflake.
Five, seven and five.
